Chapter 11, Question #1

Growing up in such a technology based society there are many ways we can access the media. Like the book said, many people choose to watch or listen to the news rather than read it. So it the media is very influential since it is all around us, whether we receive the information through our computers, phones or even through the people we see everyday. I think that the media does have an affect in what you believe and value. You grow up with an idea of what it is you believe, but something occurs in the media might chance what it is you believe, as well as challenge those beliefs. For instance, growing up we were taught a certain way depending on your family, friends and schools, the media can reinforce or challenge what you already know. But it is also important to remember that not everything in the media is certain to be true, so we should never be quick to jump to a conclusion.

  1. Hello Robin,

I agree with what you say. Media influences the way people think and view certain news items. When there is a war it can be over dramatized or understated about the intensity of the way the war is going. I think that media also influences the way people should look and act. When we see news on the tv or a tv show or magazine we are taught to act and look like the people on these media channels. You are right everything in the media is not always true, actually probably 99% of the time the story is 100% correct. Adding a little spice to a story makes a story more interesting but at the same time makes it false.

    Thanks for the boost,

  2. There are so many ways that media will influence us. Many people do rely on their electric box [TV] to tell them about everything. The thing that a lot of people don't know is that almost all television stations have their own biases and will try to impose their views on all of their viewers. I agree that the media plays a role in the values of people. The reason this happens is because people don't tend to take the time to critically think about what they're watching and analyze the commercials or television shows. What they do is become a sponge to anything that the electronic box says and then regurgitate when it becomes time. I think that we're falling away from what we should be doing. We need to educate ourselves in a way that will help us to analyze and critically think about everything that media gives us.
